An interview with Voyage Magazine.
Jamaya, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
After graduating college with a BA in Music, I had a hard time finding a teaching position so I landed a job working for a local construction company doing sales. I spent almost 10 years there perfecting my craft of helping people connect with what the right product is for them and I learned so many business skills just by being involved with a small fast-growing company. After having my daughter, Bowie Clementine, our family needed a shift with our schedules and I found a job working for a local CBD company (Little Flower Hemp Co.) through a family friend. I didn’t know much about CBD but, after my own family saw relief from using it, I knew I had to learn more.
I spent two years traveling around the nation to different hemp conventions and educating myself and others on the benefits of the plant before I felt a call to go out on my own and start my business, Clementine Collective. My company was born out of a desire to help people through curating a space they can come shop for all things self-care. My husband is an artist and so we have always had a dream of having a family business together of sharing his work with more people. When you shop the Collective, you will find many other artists we love to support along with a variety of thoughtfully curated offerings. Candles, paper goods, smudge sticks, cozy socks, bath bombs, skin care, and more that are all handcrafted here in the United States by other amazing small businesses.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Haha, I don’t think anyone has had a smooth road in 2020 and that is the year I decided to launch my business! I actually was set to open my doors to a brick and mortar space on March 27th and then, the Pandemic hit and everything changed. Retail as a whole has changed for everyone. Instead of turning a blind eye to the challenges this virus will continue to cause our industry throughout the remainder of this year, I decided to make one of the hardest decisions I’ve ever had to and move my business completely to online. I moved all of my inventory and beautifully designed shelving and storefront to my home and launched my website the day I was supposed to open to the public.
Since then, it has been a life-changing experience with peaks and valleys but a clear vision of how to move forward. I never in a million years thought I would own an online business and I am just learning as I go which can be so time consuming and hard but I also love learning and trying new things. The support my friends and family have shown has been so incredible and it has truly been an honor to weather the storm with so many inspiring small business owners who have become mentors to me. Without these challenges, there is no growth and without growth, there is no success.
Clementine Collective -what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
During my time working closely with the owners of Little Flower Hemp Co, it was there on the farm with my toes in the dirt right before the seeds went in, to the sunsets we shared right after harvest that really helped me grow a much deeper understanding and respect for the life cycle of a hemp plant, from seed to shelf. I was inspired to start my own business after realizing there was such a need for education on the plant and how to incorporate it into your daily routines.
This plant truly has the power to change our lives for the better and improve the communities we live in. On the contrary there are farming and extraction practices out there that are far superior to others and this is where I come in! I’ve found the very best hemp companies on the local and national level to bring together an array of products to satisfy any and all CBD needs. From pets to family, I have carefully curated my lineup with thoughtfulness and care to make sure I have the best for everyone. I offer free consultations and pride myself on taking the time with my customers to ensure they are buying the best option available.
There are many CBD shops opening up all over the country and I am so proud to be a part of that movement. I do believe you will find that the experience I’ve created when you shop at Clementine Collective to be a little different. It is more than just a CBD pharmacy and offers other beautiful products to enhance your rituals with this plant magic. I wanted to create a space where you can find a gift for yourself or someone else that is thoughtful and special and all about self-care which is really the best gift there is.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I am a mermaid at my core and that is because of all the time I spent on the water as a child. I remember running around naked on the beach when I was tiny to swinging off rope swings into Texas rivers in college. But my most fond memories were sailing with my Grandparents. We would sleep on the boat and go to these little islands off the East Coast where my Gramps would hide pennies and draw a map for us to go find the hidden treasure. I’ll never forget feeling so excited when we dug up those pennies. We were rich! Rich in love and fun and creating the best memories I’ll cherish forever.
